I'm not meaning to denigrate the importance of Wales, Mousie. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I'm just saying that it cannot be compared to Mary's need to learn Danish FAST. Kate is not yet Princess of Wales, and with any luck, she won't be, LOLOL. Mary's entire role and future reign is in Denmark; she needed to learn the language of her future subjects. Mary will never reign over any English speaking countries or continents. That is not true of Kate. It's just a geographical fact. Mary could not carry out her duties in English. Kate still can, not only for the time being, but for her entire role, except within a tiny country. Wales is a small part of her entire role. The people in England would not care if Kate cannot speak Welsh, I assume (though I accept that it would look bad). I know the people of Australia wouldn't. Did William sing the anthem in Welsh? I'm quite sure that if Kate didn't sing it, she would have received a pass, this time - surely?

William knows Welsh and has spoken it as well as sung the National Anthem in Welsh.
As I said it is not on the scale of Mary needing to learn Danish straight away but learning Welsh is important for Kate's role which I think with the way things are going will begin soon. I think as they are living there they will be doing several things in Welsh and Kate had better know how to say at least some conversational quotes in the language. I think William and Kate will start learning the ropes of POW and have an 'apprenticeship' in preparation. I get that feeling.
She will be Princess Of Wales and even now as William Wales' wife she will have to speak Welsh it is not optional but mandatory she will have to speak it no question she will never get a pass being part of the Prince Of Wales family and not speak Welsh.

Hi Mousiekins, out of curiousity, was there ever a Princess of Wales that didn't speak Welsh? I have the feeling that Kate probably just pick up phrases here and there but I highly doubt that she could converse in Welsh, let alone, able to sing the national anthem.
I think the press is just making things up (as usual) because truly and seriously, she hasn't done squat. Laziness doesn't sell but fabrication does IMO. Time and time again, Waity just doesn't strike me as someone on who will do more than they should or make the initiative to better those that are unfortunate. I think Waity is content to just go along for the ride by pretending to be doing things but in reality, she's happy to set on her a$$ (or arse). It's a lifestyle that she's accustomed to prior to marrying PW which is why, I highly doubt that all of a sudden, she developed a new personality as a caring princess (or duchess). She's the type on who will just do the minimum and let others carry the workload IMO.

Question 1 - No it is mandatory. Kate is on probation right now but if in the near future she still cannot speak Welsh they will not care that she is the Press darling they will make it clear they do not want her because she has not learnt Welsh.
I agree she only knows a few phrases at most like
Hello - Helo / S'mae
How are you? (formal in the north where she is ) Sut ydych chi?
Thank you [very much]. Diolch [yn fawr]
Goodbye (Formal) Da bo chi
that is all.
As for singing the National Welsh anthem, as someone who speaks Welsh and has Welsh relatives it was obvious to me that she was mouthing the words and the wrong words at that.

Thank you Mousiekins, great post. Perhaps in Waity's mind, no one can get rid of her since PW married her unless (of course), he'll divorce her which we know he's not going to. So, regardless of her lazy self, she'll be around and enjoying her life the way she see fit. And like I've said, she'll only make a minimal effort.

Thanks Mousie. I agree Ceri: it's not like anyone can just strip her of her position should she not be able to speak the Welsh language. At most, I suppose the Welsh can call a referendum and get rid of the monarchy - not sure about the legalities of that for them. Or maybe they can be denied the roles of Prince and Princess of Wales? She's most definitely a minimalist, IMO. She's so unmotivated and lazy it just beggars belief. Even if she is keeping house - which I doubt - she is supposed to be doing royal duties too. She is not expected to be hidden away. They have servants, there is no excuse for her. Royals are not like everyone else, no matter the bluster, postulating and PR. People are not that stupid. After a while, the criticism will start, IMO.

It will be like when Camilla became Princess of Wales there was a uprising in Wales with them saying she could never be their Princess it is one of the reasons she is called Duchess Of Cornwall.
They can cause noise and make her life a misery by not playing by the rules. They can say we will not except her and the RF will have to make changes.
There are ways.
